Our dentist may recommend an antibiotic treatment to combat gum disease and begin the process of restoring your oral health. Antibiotic treatment, also known as antimicrobial therapy, is often an excellent treatment option for periodontal disease. It may be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other periodontal treatments to improve your oral health.

If it is determined that an antibiotic gum treatment will benefit you, our dentist will most likely perform scaling and root planing to clear away plaque and tartar from your mouth. In more severe cases, your antibiotic therapy may be preceded by gum surgery. The antibiotic medicine will then be placed directly into the infected periodontal pockets to fight bacteria. Antibiotics used in fighting periodontal disease usually contain doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, amoxicillin, macrolide or metronidazole. Common antibiotics used in gum disease treatment include ARESTIN®, PerioChip®, ATRIDOX®, Actisite® and Elyzol®.

Please follow all instructions provided by our dentist after you leave our office. Following post-treatment care instructions and maintaining a thorough oral hygiene routine will maximize the effectiveness of your treatment and help your mouth heal.
