Why Did You Want to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Ruof originally considered becoming a general surgeon, but she realized that she wanted to be able to form lasting relationships with her patients, which really isn’t possible in the operating room! Today, dentistry allows her to form close bonds with everyone she treats. She says that when she was younger, she took for granted that she had healthy teeth, and now, she’s thrilled that she can help people who don’t recover their smile and overall wellbeing at the same time.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Ruof graduated from Canisius College before earning her dental degree (with a minor in pediatric dentistry) at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. She then participated in two years of NIH-funded research in microbiology and completed a two-year General Practice Residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, where she served as Chief Resident. Over the years, she has taken several courses through SPEAR education and is also trained to provide Botox and dermal fillers. To help her stay at the leading edge of dentistry, she is a member of the American Dental Association and New York State Dental Association.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
When she isn’t in the office, Dr. Ruof likes to keep moving. She stays active by doing Pilates, practicing yoga (she is a certified Baptiste Power Yoga Instructor), and doing all sorts of outdoor activities. Of course, this makes her extremely hungry, so she’s always eager to try one of Chicago’s excellent restaurants. Her father was a jazz DJ, so whether she’s in the car, her home, or even the operatory, she almost always has music playing.
