6 Oral Hygiene Tips for a Healthier Smile

Did you know that October is National Dental Hygiene Month? It’s time to celebrate! By being aware of how to properly care for your teeth and committing to an oral hygiene routine, you’ll be able to keep your smile healthy and bright for the foreseeable future. Even if you’re really good about brushing and flossing, there are still ways to improve your oral hygiene routine and prevent complications from developing. Here are a six oral hygiene tips in Chicago on how to better care for your smile.

Tip #1: Brush Twice Daily

Though everyone knows you’re supposed to brush your teeth twice per day, many people still skip cleaning their teeth before bed. This leaves bacteria and plaque in your mouth, which increases your chances of bad breath as well as developing cavities and gum disease. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for extra protection, and make gentle, circular motions for the deepest clean.

Tip #2: Floss Daily

Flossing removes food particles your toothbrush can’t reach from between your teeth. Since harmful oral bacteria feed off these food particles, cleaning them away lessens your chances of developing cavities.

Tip #3: Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, which helps protect your teeth from decay. It also cleans hard to reach areas that your toothbrush and dental floss can’t easily access. Additionally, mouthwash remineralizes the teeth, therefore strengthening weakened areas of the tooth enamel. Though this isn’t a substitute for regular brushing and flossing, it’s a great addition to your regular oral health regimen.

Tip #4: Drink Water

Drink a glass of water after every meal to wash away food debris and harmful acids. This will help even out the pH levels in your mouth and limit the damaging effects of acidic and sticky foods and drinks between cleanings.

Tip #5: Watch What You Eat

When we consume sugary foods or drinks, they convert into acid. This erodes your enamel, therefore making your teeth more susceptible to cavities. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee can also be harmful to teeth. Eat plenty of crisp, fresh, and crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, pears, carrots, and celery to help stimulate saliva production in the mouth. Saliva neutralizes acids as well as washes away food particles.

Tip #6: Visit the Dentist

No matter how good you are about caring for your teeth at home, there are still areas that can’t be reached without professional help. This is why visiting your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups is a vital part of keeping your mouth healthy. They can remove plaque and tartar buildups and will also check for tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and any other signs of oral health issues.
