Missing Teeth? One, Some, All?

Today, dental implants are the standard of care to replace missing teeth. If you have lost all your teeth, a few teeth, or even just one tooth, dental implants can be the answer to bringing your smile back. People lose teeth through accidents, gum disease, root canals gone bad, decay and other reasons. Those teeth can be replaced with dental implants and your smile will look beautiful and natural again. Dental implants function like regular teeth so chewing and eating can feel normal again. Gone are the days that traditional bridges are being made to replace teeth. Dental implants do not need to be attached to adjacent teeth, saving your other teeth, which would need to be filed down to have a bridge attached.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are cylinders of titanium or tooth colored zirconium, that look like tooth roots. They are placed in the jaw where the tooth or teeth are missing. The jawbone then heals around the implant. Permanent teeth then attach onto the implants.

Dental implants are mostly made from titanium, there are some implants made of ceramic or porcelain. The materials chosen are decided upon based on the procedure you need and the part of your mouth where the implant will be inserted. Implants can last upwards of 10 years when properly maintained.

Will having Dental Implants be Painful?

There is usually minimal impact on the nerves in the mouth when the implant is placed. Pain is minimal, while there can be tenderness in the gums. That can be relieved with ice and by eating soft foods. You may also be advised to take over-the-counter pain medicine and to limit excessive physical activity for 2 days or so after the implants are placed.

Taking care of your dental implants is as easy as brushing and flossing regularly. You treat them just like you would your regular teeth.

How will dental implants affect my ability to chew?

Dental implants chew food just like your regular teeth. Many people feel younger and can chew much better after having implants. People with denture and partial dentures know that chewing can be difficult. When they replace dentures or partial dentures with implants, it feels like having their regular teeth back. It can be life-changing.

What is All-on-Four? Or All-on-Six?

People who have lost all their teeth or are going to lose all their teeth can benefit from the All-on-Four or All-on-Six technique. Four to Six Implants are placed in the jaw. The whole arch of teeth is then placed on the implants on the same day. If you are losing your teeth or have loose teeth, this procedure can help you get back to a healthy mouth all in one day.
